Episode 80: Top Budget Travel Hacks
Amanda: Welcome to the Healthy Family Project podcast, covering the hot topics in the world of health, food, and family with a dose of fun. I’m your host, Amanda. Today, we get to talk about one of my favorite topics: travel. Many families feel overwhelmed or believe travel is too expensive, especially now with rising costs. But today, we have travel expert Lauren Gay, creator of the Misadventures of an Outdoorsy Diva blog, here to share her top travel tips. We are all facing challenges with inflation, but this episode offers genuine ways to navigate those inflated costs.
Amanda: Lauren, travel is top of mind this summer. We’ve been experiencing lockdowns and reopenings, so I know you have fantastic tips to share. These insights are applicable year-round. Before we dive in, please tell us a little bit about yourself.
Lauren Gay: I am so happy to be here, Amanda! I’m Lauren Gay, creator of the Outdoorsy Diva blog and brand. I focus on adventure travel and am passionate about encouraging women, particularly in the Black community, to step out of their comfort zones, travel differently, and connect with nature. This applies to all women, especially moms, who often prioritize others. It’s perfectly fine to travel with or without your kids. I’m a big advocate for incorporating national and state parks into our travels, inspiring people to explore new places.
Amanda: I completely agree. Travel has always been a part of my life, even with my kids. But for many, it can be intimidating – simple things like airport security can cause stress. I love that you encourage people to step out of their comfort zones and realize they can do it. The feeling of accomplishment is truly exhilarating.
Lauren Gay: Absolutely. With a bit of planning, you can mitigate most risks.
Amanda: So, to get everyone dreaming, do you have a favorite trip you’ve taken?
Lauren Gay: That’s an incredibly hard question, but yes, I do! My first solo international trip to the Azores Islands was amazing. It was beautiful and empowering. More recently, my favorite trip was a cruise with my son in the Sea of Cortez in Baja, California, often called the “world’s aquarium.” We island-hopped and saw jumping manta rays, whales, and swam with whale sharks and sea lions. It was beyond a dream. My son loves aquatic life, and to experience that in the actual sea was incredibly special. Baja holds a special place in my heart now.
Amanda: I need to add that to my list! My oldest loves the water and marine biology. That would be an awesome graduation present for her. We drove a portion of Baja from San Diego before the pandemic, and it’s definitely an underrated area. I was amazed by its beauty.
Lauren Gay: I totally agree; I wondered how I hadn’t been there before!
Amanda: Okay, so everyone is watching their spending. My kids constantly point out how expensive things are. I tell them everything is more expensive right now, and we need to be smart and plan. So, what are some of the most affordable places to visit, especially now?
Lauren Gay: Right now, while gas prices are a concern, road trips can still be very cost-effective, especially for families. National parks are amazing, offering built-in entertainment like wildlife, kayaking, and horseback riding. Explore national parks, regional parks, national forests, and state parks within the same vicinity for fun, memorable, and cost-effective domestic vacations. Cruises are also making a strong comeback with many deals to recoup losses from the past few years. Many offer specials for kids to travel free or at discounted rates. Mexico also offers excellent deals on all-inclusive resorts. Look beyond popular spots like Cancun and Acapulco to other Riviera Maya locations for even better value. Considering the total package, especially with kids-go-free options, can make flights worthwhile.
Amanda: Those are excellent tips! I’ll link to your website for more details. What do you think most people overlook when trying to reduce travel costs?
Lauren Gay: I have a few answers. Firstly, many people don’t realize that most travel agents don’t charge a fee. They earn commissions through relationships with various travel providers. They are knowledgeable about deals, best times to travel, and can often find better prices than you can online. Don’t underestimate their help. I’ve used travel agent friends for bigger trips, and they’ve saved me a lot. Secondly, don’t sleep on sites like Groupon Getaways. Do your due diligence by checking hotel and tour operator reviews on sites like TripAdvisor. You can find incredible deals there. Lastly, be flexible! If you’re open to different destinations and “chase the deal” instead of fixating on one place, you can discover epic trips. Sites like Travel Pirates or Momondo can inspire you with unexpected opportunities. Flexibility can save you a lot of money.
Amanda: Great tips! You reminded me of travel agents. Years ago, for my daughter’s fifth birthday, we did a Disney cruise. Our friends suggested a travel agent, and I was worried about the cost. They explained that agents work on commission. The agent planned everything perfectly, and there was no fee. It was wonderful! How do you recommend finding a travel agent?
Lauren Gay: The best way is through referrals. Ask friends and family on Facebook for recommendations. You can Google, but a personal referral offers more assurance. I happen to know many because of my industry. People love to share good experiences. I also used Groupon Getaways for a Paris and London trip with my daughter. People were surprised, but I researched the tour operators and hotels, even calling them directly. They all confirmed the Groupon package was the best deal. We had no problems, and it was a fantastic trip. Many Groupon trips also offer different levels, from 3-star to 4-star hotels, so read the fine print for upgrade options.
Amanda: That’s amazing. I’m going to Ireland this month on a trip rescheduled from 2020. I asked on Facebook for driving tips in Ireland and received so much valuable insight, like not upgrading to a larger car because the roads are narrow. People love to share their real-life experiences, good or bad, and it’s incredibly helpful.
Amanda: So, what are some of the best ways long-distance travelers can save money on airfare right now? Flights have become so expensive!
Lauren Gay: Airfare right now is truly “disrespectful”! Use tools like Google Flights. You can set flight alerts and view a calendar showing price fluctuations. If you have flexibility, shifting your travel dates by a few days can save hundreds of dollars. Google Flights doesn’t show all airlines (like Southwest), but you can use its insights on dates and then check those airlines directly. Southwest also has a feature to show price changes by day. Beyond that, the biggest winners are those who leverage credit card points and loyalty programs. If you don’t have a travel rewards credit card, now is an excellent time to get one. You have to buy gas and groceries anyway; use a card that rewards you for everyday expenses, pay it off monthly, and watch those points accumulate quickly.
Amanda: I have the Southwest card, and I’m looking into other cards that offer more flexibility. We recently used my Southwest points for my daughters’ flights to Palm Desert, which saved us significantly. You can also have loyalty with multiple airlines or hotels. Chase and Amex offer excellent travel cards that can get you into airport lounges. With the current chaotic state of travel – numerous cancellations and delays – lounge access is a huge perk. Free food, drinks, and a comfortable space can save you money and stress during delays.
Amanda: What is your ultimate travel tip or tips that you always share with people?
Lauren Gay: Right now, I will forever champion travel insurance. It’s not just for international travel anymore. With fluctuating COVID protocols and airline compensation policies changing, travel insurance provides peace of mind. It covers extended stays, medical emergencies (especially if you get sick abroad and can’t return immediately), delayed flights, and even lost or damaged luggage. It’s worth every penny, and it’s not as expensive as you might think. I’ve personally been compensated for significantly delayed luggage and even delayed flights before my next leg even took off. We’re planning trips for 2023 and 2024, and things can change quickly. Travel insurance ensures you don’t lose your investment. Another key tip: don’t overlook hotel loyalty programs. I swear by Hotels.com. After 10 nights, you get a free night based on the average cost of your stays. Plus, you can often still add your Marriott Bonvoy or other hotel chain loyalty numbers when you check in to earn points and perks directly with the hotel. These free nights accumulate faster than you think and offer great value.
Amanda: I’m definitely taking that Hotels.com tip! I’m a Marriott person and didn’t realize I could double-dip on loyalty points. That’s a game-changer. This has been wonderful, Lauren! I feel re-energized to tackle my travel planning. I’d been discouraged by flight costs, but you’ve given us solid strategies to navigate them. Thank you.
Amanda: I’ve been asking all our new guests: what does being a healthy family mean to you?
Lauren Gay: Honestly, what I’ve learned in the last few years is that a healthy family is a balanced one. It’s a family that plays hard and has intentional, planned fun. Game nights and movie nights are crucial for connecting, helping everyone relax, and letting their guard down. This mental and spiritual balance is vital, especially with everything happening in the world. It’s made me cherish small moments as much as big, extravagant trips. My son, who is 22, and my mom, who lives locally, still make it a point to have these family moments. Life can get busy with schoolwork and chores, but we must intentionally plug in the fun, decompress, and enjoy each other. Balance is key.
Amanda: I love all of that. Another good reminder! We’ll definitely have you back on the podcast. Everyone needs to travel, see new things, get out of their comfort zone, and experience different cultures. It inspires you and opens your mind. Thank you so much for joining us, Lauren. We’ll add all your links to the show notes. Before we close out, where can listeners find and connect with you?
