What are blood oranges?

Blood oranges resemble regular oranges on the outside, but their flesh ranges from deep crimson to ruby red. Their flavor is often slightly sweeter than common oranges, with a subtle berry-like note that can remind you of raspberry—adding a lovely complexity to drinks and desserts.

What you need

  1. Prosecco or Champagne: any dry sparkling white wine you prefer.
  2. Blood oranges: seasonal blood oranges are ideal; substitute a different orange if unavailable.
  3. Lemon: sliced to add brightness alongside the oranges.
  4. Sugar: a small amount to balance acidity, optional to taste.
  5. Orange liqueur: Cointreau, Triple Sec or your favorite orange liqueur.
  6. Seltzer water: club soda or flavored seltzer for extra fizz.

  1. Juice half of the blood oranges and slice the remaining oranges into rounds. Slice the lemon as well. If the juice has pulp, strain it through a mesh strainer for a smoother drink.
  2. Place the sliced oranges and lemon in the bottom of a large pitcher. Add the blood orange juice, orange liqueur and sugar, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Add seltzer to taste.
  3. Pour in the sparkling wine and gently stir to combine. Chill for 1–2 hours before serving. Garnish each glass with a sprig of thyme if desired.

A few sprigs of fresh thyme add a lovely herbal note, but the sangria is delightful on its own. This simple, elegant cocktail is quick to make and looks gorgeous in a pitcher or individual glasses.

Whether you’re hosting a big gathering or a small get-together, focus on good drinks and food and enjoy the company. This bright, festive sangria helps set the mood for making memories.
