I may not be the biggest Halloween fan, but I’m a huge Oreo lover. This Halloween Oreo Dirt Cake is inspired by the classic dirt pudding and my no-bake Oreo cheesecake cups. The result is rich, creamy, and even more festive than the original. If you like no-bake desserts, you might also enjoy Halloween cake pops or other quick Oreo treats.

Why you will love this Halloween Dirt Cake:

  • No baking required.
  • Can be made in a single large dish or in individual cups.
  • Kid-friendly but loved by adults too.
  • Easily customized for other holidays or color schemes.

Ingredients:

  • Oreos: Halloween Oreos come in a 20 oz package (about 40 cookies). One package can work, but 1 to 1½ packages makes the layers more distinct. Use what you prefer.
  • Milk: Whole milk is used here, but any milk works for the pudding.
  • Instant vanilla pudding: Use instant pudding mix (regular or French vanilla).
  • Butter: Unsalted, softened.
  • Cream cheese: Full fat works best, but reduced-fat can be used.
  • Powdered sugar: Adds sweetness and helps thicken the creamy layer (contains cornstarch).
  • Cool Whip (or whipped topping): Thawed before mixing.
  • Vanilla extract: Enhances the vanilla flavor.
  • Food coloring: Orange food coloring or a mix of red and yellow to reach the desired hue. Natural dyes work if preferred.
  • Sprinkles and decorations: Optional—ghosts, eyeballs, candy pumpkins, or gummy worms are fun additions.

Gummy worms are a classic for dirt cake, but sprinkles or themed candies add a festive touch and are toddler-approved.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Begin by preparing the Oreos. I prefer most of the cookies crushed to a fine, crumb-like texture, while reserving a portion roughly chopped for texture between layers.

Crush about one package of Oreos to a fine grain in a food processor. Pulse about half of another package so the pieces remain chunkier. Combine both and set aside.

Prepare the creamy pudding layer:

  • Make the pudding: Whisk together the milk and instant pudding mixes for about 2 minutes until smooth. Because you often use a bit less liquid than package directions, it will thicken quickly. Chill in the refrigerator for about 5 minutes to set.
  • Mix the base: While the pudding chills, beat the softened butter, cream cheese and powdered sugar until creamy and smooth (1–2 minutes).
  • Combine: Add the chilled pudding to the cream cheese mixture and beat until fully incorporated and smooth.
  • Fold in: Gently fold in the thawed Cool Whip, vanilla extract and food coloring. Adjust the coloring to reach the desired orange shade.

Assemble your Dirt Cake:

You can assemble this as 12–16 individual servings in small jars, bowls or plastic cups, or layer it in a 9×13 inch pan or trifle bowl. The proportions below are for a large trifle-style presentation.

  • Layer 1: Spread about one-third of the crushed Oreos in the bottom of your dish and gently press into an even layer.
  • Layer 2: Spoon half of the orange pudding mixture over the Oreo layer and spread evenly.
  • Layer 3: Add another third of the Oreos and press gently to level.
  • Layer 4: Spoon the remaining pudding over the Oreo layer and smooth it out.
  • Top layer: Finish with the remaining crushed Oreos and decorate with sprinkles, candy pumpkins, candy corn, or other seasonal toppings.

For best texture, chill the assembled dessert at least 2–3 hours so the layers set and flavors meld. It can be made a day ahead for optimal results.

Other Ways to Serve this Dessert:

  • Individual servings: Serve in jars, glasses, or bowls for 12–20 servings depending on size. Small yogurt glasses make charming single-serve presentations.
  • 9×13 inch pan: Layer the dessert in a pan for a crowd. You can create thinner or multiple orange layers depending on how you distribute the cookie crumbs and pudding.

Recipe Notes and Tips:

  • Make ahead: Prep up to 24 hours before serving. Chilling overnight improves texture and flavor.
  • Customize colors: Change the food coloring for holidays, team colors, or special events—red and green for Christmas, etc.
  • Substitutions: Regular Oreos work well if seasonal Oreos aren’t available. The orange color is optional.

  • Halloween sprinkles or candy for decoration

Instructions

Prep the Oreos:

  • Add about 3/4 of the Oreos to a food processor and process until fine and crumb-like. Transfer to a bowl. Pulse the remaining Oreos until they are smaller chunks, not as fine, and combine with the crumbs. Set aside.

Make the pudding layer:

  • Whisk the milk and instant pudding mixes for about 2 minutes until smooth. Chill in the refrigerator for about 5 minutes to set slightly.

  • Fold in thawed Cool Whip, vanilla and food coloring until color is uniform. Adjust color as needed.

Assemble the Dirt Cake:

  • Layer one-third of the crushed Oreos in the bottom of a trifle bowl or dish and level. Spoon half of the orange pudding mixture over the crumbs and spread gently.
  • Add another third of the Oreos and level. Spoon the remaining pudding over this layer and smooth. Top with the remaining Oreos and decorate with sprinkles or candy.
  • Chill at least 2 hours before serving (up to 24 hours). Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Notes

  • Regular Oreos work fine if themed Oreos are unavailable.
