Sweet and salty is my go-to flavor combo, especially for snacks. This easy maple roasted trail mix is a simple way to enjoy roasted nuts with a touch of maple. Making your own trail mix saves money, reduces the need to pick through a store mix, and lets you include only the ingredients you love.

Why this trail mix recipe works:

  • Quick and easy. Combine the ingredients, spread on a sheet pan and roast. Let cool and it’s ready to snack on.
  • Highly customizable. Swap nuts and dried fruit to suit your preferences. Try cashews instead of pecans, or dried cranberries in place of raisins. Add chocolate chips after the mix has cooled for a melt-free treat.
  • Longer shelf life. Stored in an airtight container at room temperature, this trail mix will stay fresh for weeks—often up to two months—making it convenient to snack from over time.

Ingredients:

  • Almonds (raw)
  • Pecans (halves or pieces)
  • Pepitas (pumpkin seeds)
  • Golden raisins
  • Coconut flakes
  • Coconut oil (melted) or another neutral oil
  • Pure maple syrup (or honey)
  • Sea salt
  • Vanilla extract

Ingredient notes and swaps:

  • Swap canola or another neutral oil for coconut oil if you prefer. If you want no coconut flavor, choose refined coconut oil.
  • Coconut flakes work better than shredded coconut for this recipe since they’re larger and less messy for on-the-go snacking.
  • Honey can be used instead of maple syrup for a different sweetness profile.

Expert tips:

  • Reduce stickiness: Keep the oil and maple syrup amounts modest so the mix isn’t overly sticky—ideal for carrying in a bag.
  • Add chocolate later: If you want chocolate chips or chunks, stir them in only after the mix has cooled to prevent melting.
  • Make clusters: If the mix cools undisturbed, it will form clusters that you can break apart for chunkier bites.

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes
Servings: 10

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c raw almonds
  • 1 c pecans (halves or pieces)
  • 1/2 c pepitas (pumpkin seeds)
  • 1/2 c golden raisins
  • 1/2 c coconut flakes
  • 2 T coconut oil, melted
  • 2 T pure maple syrup or honey
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a medium bowl, mix the almonds, pecans, pepitas, raisins and coconut flakes. Add melted coconut oil, maple syrup (or honey), sea salt and vanilla. Stir until everything is lightly coated.
  • Spread the mixture evenly on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Bake for about 15 minutes, watching closely so the coconut flakes don’t burn.
  • Allow to cool 5–10 minutes. Once cooled, break into clusters if desired and store in an airtight container at room temperature.

Notes

  • Oil and maple syrup are kept minimal to reduce stickiness for an on-the-go snack. Increase if you prefer a sweeter, stickier mix.
  • Add chocolate chips or chunks only after the mix has cooled to avoid melting.
  • Letting the mix cool undisturbed will create clusters you can break apart for chunkier bites.
