These Air Fryer Fish Tacos are ready start to finish in about 15 minutes. Toss a simple cilantro lime slaw together while the fish air fries and you’ll have a fast, flavorful taco dinner. Use any mild white fish—tilapia, mahi mahi, cod, etc.—for an easy weeknight meal the whole family will enjoy.

My husband wasn’t a fish-taco fan—until I made this recipe. Now he asks for it regularly. That says a lot.
Tacos are a weekly staple in our house. When I want something simple and satisfying, these fish tacos join our rotation alongside favorites like chicken BBQ tacos and shrimp tacos. Even picky kids can be placated with a cheese tortilla while the rest of us enjoy these bright, spicy tacos.
Pair the tacos with a spicy mango guacamole or a cauliflower black bean salad to make a full meal.

Ingredients and substitutions

- Tilapia or other white fish: Tilapia is affordable and mild, but any white fish like mahi mahi or cod works well.
- Olive oil: Helps the spice rub adhere and keeps the fish moist. Any neutral oil or a spray oil will work.
- Spices: Chili powder, cumin, oregano, paprika, cayenne, garlic powder and onion powder. Reduce cayenne if you prefer less heat; you can always add more later.
- Coleslaw mix: A mix of cabbage and carrots is ideal. Purple cabbage adds nice color, but use what you have.
- Mayonnaise: Adds creaminess and tang to the slaw. Vegan mayo works fine if you prefer.
- Cilantro: Freshly chopped for the best flavor.
- Lime juice: Fresh is best; reserve wedges for serving.
- Garlic: Use garlic powder in the spice rub and minced garlic in the slaw for the best texture and flavor.
How to make these fish tacos

Step 1: Mix the spice blend. Spray the air fryer basket with oil. Pat the fish dry, lay it in the basket, brush with olive oil, and press the spice mix onto the fillets. Lightly spritz the top with oil to keep the spices moist while cooking.

Step 2: Preheat the air fryer to 400°F and cook the fish 8–10 minutes, or until opaque and flaky. Internal temperature should reach 145°F. Use a spatula to remove and flake the fish into taco-sized pieces.

Step 3: While the fish cooks, combine the coleslaw mix, mayonnaise, lime juice, minced garlic, chopped cilantro, and optional sugar. Taste and adjust salt and lime as needed.

Step 4: Add the slaw to warm tortillas, top with flaked fish and an extra squeeze of lime. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2–3 days.

Recipe tips
- No air fryer? Bake the fish at 400°F for about 15 minutes on parchment paper, or until flaky and cooked through.
- Thicker fillets need more time. Aim for 145°F internal temperature—add a couple of minutes at a time until done.
- Don’t flip the fish in the air fryer. It can break apart. If you like, place parchment in the basket for easier removal.
- Single layer is best. Avoid overlapping pieces so they cook evenly. Cook in batches if necessary.
- Want smokiness? Substitute smoked paprika for regular paprika for a subtle smoky flavor.
